What Is Font Clerk?
Font Clerk is a utility for analyzing and reporting on fonts installed in your system. It allows you to see what types of fonts are installed (screen fonts, TrueType‚Ñ¢, or Type I), and select from several report formats for output to a printer. In addition to its reporting capabilities, Font Clerk also allows you to convert a Macintosh TrueType‚Ñ¢ font to a format of TrueType‚Ñ¢ recognoized by Microsoft Windows.
Font Clerk has been expanding ever since its initial release to the Shareware world, and will continue to expand as new functionality is added with each release.
New Features
Several new features have been added in version 4.1. These features are summarized below:
[1] A filter called "Show Only Screen Fonts" to allow you to view only screen fonts.
[2] Labels are displayed on the screen and reports showing the current filer active at the time of print.
[3] The export option now exports the Font Info report format (flags for screen, trueType‚Ñ¢ and Type I).
[4] Font Clerk 4.1 now supports Balloon Help.
[5] Provide better control for cancelling print operations.
Bug Fixes
[1] Fixed a screen refresh problem when changing filters.
[2] Fixed a page numbering problem with the Font List report.
[3] Fixed a problem which arose when clicking on a empty cell in the font list.
Minimum Configuration
Font Clerk 4.1 will run on any Macintosh running System 6.05 or later. Both black and white, and color monitors are supported. Certain functions such as the Create Enpty Suitcase option will be available only if System 7 is running.
The Menus
Export Font Info...
This option was changed from the 4.0 version. This option now exports a text file showing each font displayed in the font list at the time this option is selected. For each font listed in the text file, an entry showing whether a screen font, TrueType‚Ñ¢ font, and Type I exists, is listed beside each font name.
Page Setup...
Full Page Setup support is offered in all report formats.
Print Font List...
This report type is a multi-column format showing each font displayed in the Font Clerk 4.1 window in its own typeface. If you have selected Show Only TrueType‚Ñ¢ or Show Only Type I from the Utilities menu, this report will only print the indicated font type. To print a complete list of all fonts installed, make sure the Show All Fonts item is selected in the Utilities menu.
WARNING!
On PostScript printers without sufficient memory, this report type may not print. The large number of typefaces on a single page can exceed the available PostScript virtual memory on printers with small amounts of RAM.
Print Font Info...
This report type displays each font shown in the Font Clerk 4.1 window, with information on what font types are available for each typeface. The 3 font categories reported on are screen fonts, TrueType fonts, and Type I fonts. If you have selected Show Only TrueType‚Ñ¢ or Show Only Type I from the Utilities menu, this report will only print the indicated font type. To print a complete list of all fonts installed, make sure the Show All Fonts item is selected in the Utilities menu.
Note : If ATM is not currently loaded, Font Clerk will report "No" on each Type I typeface. You must have ATM installed and turned on for Font Clerk to report on Type I (ATM) fonts.
Print Character Sheet...
This report type shows the full 0-255 ASCII character set for the selected font(s). Below each character (glyph) is a label showing either the key sequence required at the keyboard to achieve that character, or the ASCII value the character. Which label type depends on a setting in the Preference dialog (see Preference Dialog...).
Header...
This dialog allows you to enter a single line of text to be printed at the top of each page printed.
Footer...
This dialog allows you to enter a single line of text to be printed at the bottom of each page printed.
Preferences...
This dialog allows you to specify which windows open on startup, and which label type to use on printed character sheets.
Convert To Windows TrueType‚Ñ¢...
This option allows you to take any selected Macintosh TrueType‚Ñ¢ fonts displayed in the Font Clerk 4.1 window, and convert it to a format of TrueType‚Ñ¢ used in Microsoft Windows. You will be asked for a file name for each selected font. If a font selected is not a Macintosh TrueType‚Ñ¢ font, you will receive a dialog telling you that the selected font can not be converted.
Note: If your machine is not capable of rendering TrueType‚Ñ¢ fonts, this menu item will be grayed and not selectable.
Create Empty Suitcase...
This option allows you to create and name an empty font suitcase file. You must be running System 7 or later in order to access this menu option. On all other system versions, this menu option will be disabled.
System 7 users can double-click on the suitcase to open it and see its contents, and can also drag font files onto the suitcase for storing and organizing fonts.
Show All Fonts
When this item is selected, the scrolling list in the Font Clerk 4.1 window will display all fonts regardless of their type (TrueType, Type I etc.).
Show Only Screen Fonts
When this item is selected, the scrolling list in the Font Clerk 4.1 window will display only screen fonts. All other font formats will be removed from the list. It is important to note that this option will show only those typefaces with screen fonts installed. If a typeface has both TrueType‚Ñ¢ and screen fonts, it will be displayed in the font list. If the typeface has a TrueType‚Ñ¢ but no screen font, it will not be displayed in the font list.
Show Only TrueType‚Ñ¢
When this item is selected, the scrolling list in the Font Clerk 4.1 window will display only TrueType‚Ñ¢ fonts. All other font formats will be removed from the list.
Show Only Type I
When this item is selected, the scrolling list in the Font Clerk 4.1 window will display only Type I fonts. All other font formats will be removed from the list
The Toolbar
The following button are found in the toolbar in the Font Clerk 4.1 window. Below is a summary of their meanings:
Sample Text
 
The Sample Text button will open the Sample Text window if it is closed, or will bring that window to the front if it is already opened. The Sample Text window shows the currently selected typeface in several point sizes.
Font Info
 
The Font Info button will open the Font Info window if it is closed, or will bring that window to the front if it is already opened. The Font Info window provides detailed information about the currently selected font. Ascent, descent, and leading values are shown.
System Info
 
The System Info button will open the System Info window if it is closed, or will bring that window to the front if it is already opened. The System Info window displays valuable information about your system. If tells you which system software version you are running, whether Adobe Type Manager is loaded, and whether the system you are operating on is currently capable of rendering TrueType fonts.
Convert To Windows TrueType‚Ñ¢
 
The Convert To Windows TrueType‚Ñ¢ button allows you to convert all selected Macintosh TrueType‚Ñ¢ fonts into a version of TrueType‚Ñ¢ used in Microsoft Word. You will be asked to name each font.
Print Charcter Sheet
 
The Print Charcter Sheet button will print the full character sheet for each font selected in the font list. Please keep in mind that only those fonts displayed in the font list are used. Be sure and check the filter you have running to ensure you have all the fonts you want on your hardcopy. You can change the filter by selecting one of the Show Only options from the Utilities menu.
The Font List
The scrolling list in the Font Clerk 4.1 window initially shows all fonts currently installed in your system. The content of this list can be altered by selecting one of the Show Only options from the Utilities menu. When one of these options are selected, the gray bar across the top portion of the screen, and the header of most report types, will display the current Show Only options you have in effect.
Single clicking on the name of a font will update information about that font on all open windows. You may also click and drag on the list to perform an extended selection of more than one font. This method selects a contiguous range of fonts. If you wish to select a non-contiguous list of fonts, simply click on the first font you wish to select, and shift-click on all other fonts you wish to add to your selection.
Note : Selecting more than one font is only valid in the cases of the Character Sheet report type and Convert To Windows TrueType‚Ñ¢ menu options. The font information shown on each window is displayed for the first font is a selection range only.
